Uncover a Great Book!
Hartwood Summer Reading Program 2026
How much should I read?
The Hartwood PTO is challenging every child to read or be read to in their early years of learning, all summer long! Students entering Kindergarten through 3rd grade should read at least 1000 minutes this summer. That may sound like a lot, but it is only 15 minutes a day! Students entering 4th and 5th grade should read at least 1200 minutes this summer, only 18 minutes each day.
How do I show how much I have read?
Please use the summer reading log to record the minutes read. You do NOT need to fill it in each day but should fill in minutes for the days you do read. Before you turn in your log, please make sure to total the minutes for each week. Reading logs are due to the library or homeroom teachers by Friday, September 4,, 2026. Turn in all your minutes even if you don’t meet your grade-level goal!! Every minute of reading counts toward the Hartwood READ OUT CELEBRATION!
What can I read?
Reading should be appropriate for your level but may be from books, magazines, comics, poetry, etc. Even audiobooks count! You may even count reading from fun websites such as National Geographic Kids and PebbleGo. Apps such as Hoopla and Libby allow you to borrow books online!
What can I earn?
Every student who meets or exceeds their grade-level goal will earn:
● a voucher for a free book that may be used at the Fall Book Fair
● their name on our Summer Reading Challenge Readers “Wall of Fame”
● a chance to be chosen as a library helper for part of the day
A HARTWOOD READ OUT CELEBRATION!!
Every minute of reading over the summer counts! The HPTO set a school-wide reading goal of 175,000 minutes! If Hartwood students meet or exceed this goal, the HPTO will host a school wide READ OUT (date TBD in Fall). Students bring their favorite book to school and go outside to lounge and read together. The HPTO will provide a special surprise to all students during the READ OUT. It is sure to be a fun celebration so make sure to turn in your reading log even if you didn’t hit your grade-level goal.
Have a great summer!
